Amaranth Worm Lacework

DESCRIPTION:
Amaranth would be a wonderful addition to my garden with its beautiful greens and plentiful grain heads. Once the seeds germinated and the plants were growing nicely, the worm invasion happened. As a gardener I regularly scout for insects, worms and diseases but this invasion happened almost overnight. The worms turned the amaranth leaves into intricately cut lace patterns. Rather than mourn the damage to the plants I capture this image of the lace pattern on the amaranth leaves. I tip my hat to the southern cabbageworms’ artistic flair.

The flowering bee balm in the foreground attracts numerous varieties of bees throughout the growing season. Sitting on the chaise and studying the visiting pollinators caused me to purchase a field guide to identifying bees. Bees come in many sizes, shapes, and colors.

Dallas Red Lantana

This classic variety of lantana is one of the few plants I drag into the garage for the winter. Its continuous blooms transition from yellow to orange to deep red. Hummingbirds, butterflies and bees find the blooms irresistible. A friend gave me a cutting of Dallas red lantana which thrives year after year.

Deck Rocker with Hogwire

Sitting in the garden is enhanced when in a rocking chair. Life seems simpler and a bit slower. When building our backyard deck we discovered the wonder of PVC-coated hog wire. The 3x3 inch black hog wire becomes transparent to the eye so the views of the garden are unimpeded.

Build a water garden and a fascinating eco-system will come. Among the settlers in the water garden are the beloved dragonflies. The dragonfly has 3 life stages: egg (in the water), nymph (in the water), and adult (flying). The eggs of the dragonfly take 1-2 years to develop but the adult dragonfly lives only weeks. This iridescent blue dragonfly is resting on a lotus leaf in the water garden.

Residing east of the Mississippi River, I have the pleasure of frequent visits from Eastern bluebirds in my backyard. Because the brilliant bluebird was almost fading into the foliage behind, I digitally preserve the color of the bird and turn the balance of the image into black and white. I believe the bluebird wholeheartedly agrees with my decision to highlight him.

Moss on Rock

Beauty at the micro level is often the most breath-taking. Every spring this dandelion emerges from the moss of a boulder in the water garden. Its roots extend deep into the water allowing it to thrive all summer. After the first frost, it hibernates for the winter only to re-emerge the following spring. Breath-taking.

Night Light Squiggle

Night photography is endless fun. A remotely-controlled camera shutter allows you to use flashlights to highlight whatever may be of interest. The humor of this image is that I was standing slightly beyond the reach of motion-activated floodlights when setting up the shoot. After a long wait, the last of the motion-activated lights cycled off and I was ready to open the camera shutter. At that moment my beloved husband walked outside and asked, “Hey, how’s the photography going tonight?” and ALL of the motion –activated lights came back on. This shot comes after another long wait.

Garden math: red + green = beauty. Zinnias fall in and out of favor with trendy gardeners but they are a staple for me. Zinnias are hardy, reliable, attractive to pollinators, durable as cut flowers, and only $1.49/packet of seeds. Zinnias have a time-honored spot in my garden every year.

The west side of our home gets intense afternoon sun. Only hardy plants survive in the ground. And only succulents survive and thrive in a pot. This Crassula succulent welcomes the heat, infrequent watering, and minimal care. Every winter my 2 pots of succulents come into the garage. With minimal care they are happy to return to the hot sun once the threat of frost has passed in the spring.
