DESCRIPTION:
Every grandchild gets a quilt from me as a way to know how much I love each child. Every grandchild is different so every quilt is different.
AZC is bright, organized, and insightful so this quilt’s fabric and design reflect those characteristics. Together we explore outdoors so the vivid colors and floral print capture our shared adventure. The machine embroidered name is oversized to create presence on the busy floral background. This quilt is a blend of my granddaughter’s inputs (fabric and thread colors) and my surprises (design, layout, and details).

DWP Baby Quilt

DESCRIPTION:
To create a sense of legacy in this quilt I incorporate five (5) counted cross-stitch blocks that I created when DWP's mother (my daughter) was a baby. Because little information existed at the time on how to quilt counted cross-stitch blocks, I use free motion quilting to stabilize each block without compromising the beauty of the hand-stitched work.

My mother made quilts with a double wedding ring design so I follow in her footsteps with this modern interpretation of the classic design.

This quilt is my first effort at free motion quilting. When I created EEP’s baby quilt, it had not occurred to me that a child would grow taller than 40 inches and still want a quilt. I learned and now make the quilts much larger. This quilt has endured many launderings and is as supple and intact as the day it was delivered.

To accommodate her love for rainbows, I transformed a modern interpretation of the double wedding ring design to be a rainbow. ROY G BIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) is the sequence of the rainbow as well as the border. This is the first time I used wool quilt batting which creates a delightful loft with multi-season warmth.

To accommodate her love for rainbows, I transformed a modern interpretation of the double wedding ring design to be a rainbow. This 24 inch x 24 inch (exhibition-dictated dimensions) quilted block was part of BLUE: A Quilt Challenge exhibition at Memphis’ Crosstown Arts & Gallery. Throughout the city, quilters submitted their artistic interpretation of BLUE creating a fabulous exhibition of the art of the quilt. In the spirit of experienced artists working smarter, I incorporate a previous design of the airplane and the banner to create the I Love Memphis piece.

This collage quilt incorporates the aviation theme of this grandson’s bedroom including a replica of the Memphis International Airport air traffic tower. To bring in the legacy of the child’s father (my son) and mother, I include fabric from my son’s baby nursery and the bear from my daughter-in-law’s beloved blanket when she was a baby.
